After much concern a new sponsor has come forward to ensure that
the Edible School Gardens Program at Tewantin State School
continues. It is with much relief, and pleasure that Leonie
Shanahan announced that the new sponsor, Kingfisher Boat Hire,
would support the project at Tewantin State School until April
next year.
Brett Robb formerly of Hilton Terrace Petrol Station and now
manager of Kingfisher Boat Hire says we see Leonies Edible
School Gardens Program as an excellent method to live out our
beliefs of a healthier environment through demonstrating our
commitment to the community we hope to encourage other local
businesses to do the same. At Kingfisher Boat Hire we
believe that local business have the ability to create a
healthier and happier community.
After the disappointment of the Fuel for Food program, Leonie
has been amazed at the support she has received from the
community and local businesses over the past few weeks, Being
involved in gardening and having children of my own, I have
always believed in the importance of learning how to grow and eat
healthy food, though the comments and support from members of the
community has really brought home the fact that our society is
becoming aware and concerned that children nowadays are heading
down an unhealthy road when it comes to eating habits.
Quite often mention was also made that too many children nowadays
dont have the opportunity to experience the simple joy of being
involved in a backyard garden anymore.
The offers of support have been overwhelming and it is so
heartening to see that so many people care so much about the
future of our children and the opportunity for them to learn a
healthy lifestyle that will benefit them for the rest of their
lives. Leonie is extremely grateful for the support of the
local community and businesses and would like to take this
opportunity to thank them profusely.
Kingfisher Boat Hire will be ensuring that this particular
project is completed and the children continue to build their
garden with Leonie being back where she belongs in the
Tewantin State School permaculture garden with the children,
getting their hands dirty, watching what they have planted grow,
and enjoying the fruits of their labour. Harvest Day next
year will be a very fulfilling and special occasion for this
garden!
