Our Lady Of The Rosary Primary School

Responsible stewardship of our environment is one of 5 key focus areas of our Vision for the Future at OLR School, Caloundra.   The remaining key focus areas are: growing a spirituality framed by the Catholic tradition; developing learning programs which are rich, real and relevant; establishing community partnerships whose value adding capacity has a strong degree of mutuality; transparent governance.

Each key focus area is strongly interconnected with the other reflecting the interconnectedness of our universe. For further information please visit our school website http://www.olr.qld.edu.au/web/

In 2009 Leonie Shanahan from Edible School Gardens introduced and implemented the establishment of a permaculture garden in our school precinct. This was one of a number of strategic actions identified for sustaining responsible stewardship of our environment. Primarily a child centered learning project, it involved partnerships with our state government, community experts, local retailers, parents and school staff. The value added to children's learning is immeasurable. Science, technology, SOSE, Mathematics and English Essential Learnings are demonstrated in abundance. The value added to our local economy will be in the order of $ 30 000. The social capital value adding is also immeasurable with up to 40 parents involved in the project with their children and with parents from neighboring schools visiting to learn from the experience of our school community. A Catholic spirituality is strongly linked to ecological justice. For all involved to connect so strongly with the land was an immersion in the nurturing energy of mother earth.
