Costa Georgiadis says Great to see Leonie putting her experience out there
01 Mar 13
One thing that really encourages me at the moment is the amount
of information that is being shared through courses,
workshops, lectures, online talks, panel discussions. The list
goes on and what it says to me is that the appetite for real,
workable, hands on experience and alternatives is growing across
the board.
Skilled people are sharing their knowledge and this information
is making its way through all levels of the community, from
environmental groups to foodies, school yards to community
gardens, young professionals to farmers. And this sharing of info
is helping people join the dots, where the soil experience of a
Paul Stammets is inspiring local community gardeners who are then
sharing it in their school garden program and then the kids are
taking it home and sharing it with their parents.
One person I have had the experience of seeing in action when it
comes to inspiring kids is Leonie Shanahan. She has been teaching
her Edible School Gardens Program across the Sunshine Coast since
2001. I had the pleasure of joining in on one of her School
Harvest Festivals at Caloundra last year and the way that the
school community embraced this event was nothing short of
breathtaking. The parents were equally as excited as the kids and
the whole event is the type of activity that develops into a
signature calendar moment year after year.
Up until now Leonie's experience has been shared within school
and local communities. But over the next month Leonie will be
opening her home garden as the stage from which to present two
workshops:
Growing Healthy Food: The Essential Toolkit
(basically a lets get started with organic gardening)
Growing Healthy Food: Taking the Next Step
(ok, you are experienced at growing your own food so time to look
deeper into soil, plants, maintenance and food quality.)
Check out the link at 'workshops" for dates and times. And bring
a big net to catch all the information on the day !!
Great to see that Leonie is putting her experience out
there
along with so many other local, national and international
educators, farmers, specialists and inspirationalists ( if there
is such a word.
From Dr Arden Andersen to Joel Salatin, Dave Jacke to Annie
Leonard, Sustainable Living Festival in Melbourne to
WOMADelaide...I am excited about what is out there and hope you
are too...
